If an individual's estate does not exceed $625,000.00, there are no state or federal estate taxes. However, if a married couples assets do exceed $625,000.00, state and federal estate taxes can take up to 55 % of the estate. Careful estate planing can eliminate estate taxes on up to $1,250,000.00 and greatly reduce taxes on larger estates.
